Situated about 50 kilometers from Bagan, the Popa region is located in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Division, in the central part of the country. Mount Popa is a distinctive mountain in this region. An extinct volcano forming the northern offshoot of the Bago Yoma mountain range, occupying the lower central region. The mountain is 4,900 feet (1,465 meters) above sea-level.
For the energetic, there is time to climb the 777 steps to view the numerous Nat shrines atop the mountain. It is situated an hour drive from Bagan and known as an Oasis of Central Myanmar.
