Putao is situated in Kachin State surrounded by snow–capped mountains. It is cool the whole year round and there are many varieties of citrus fruits, grown in the region’s numerous orchards. Flowing streams and rivulets, straw roofed houses and fences of pebbles and creek stones provide pleasant, pastoral scenes. Suspension bridges are typical river crossings in this region. People of the Rawan, Lisu, Khanti Shan, Jingphaw, and Kachin are represented in the region. Putao is the nearest town to the base camp for climbing Mt Khakaborazi (5880m) which is the highest mountain in Myanmar and in all Southeast Asia.
Putao makes an excellent base camp for trekking to see many of the rare tribes of Myanmar.
